History:
Akima was born on Earth in 3024. When the Earth is destroyed, Akima escapes with her grandmother, Miwa Kunimoto. They live on the Houston colony with other human refugees, and eventually move to another colony - New Marrakech - when Akima is ten years old. Akima grows up primarily with humans. She is raised on her grandmother's wisdom and philosophies, and the colony's collective hopes for the future. Growing up, Akima's grandmother would brush her long black hair and tell her about Earth. When she's 14, she graduates from her education to working in the colony, as is traditional. She gets a job in the local community bakery. Shortly afterwards, Miwa dies. In her grief, Akima cuts off her hair and places it in the arms of her grandmother. Before she dies, Miwa leaves Akima in the care of Mohammed Bourain, a teacher and another member of the Titan project. She finds a new family with him and his son, Ishaq, who is two years younger than Akima. Mohammed teaches Akima all about the Titan and the importance of preserving Earth's culture and history.
When Akima is 15, New Marrakech is attacked by the Drej. In an attempt to save his research and records, Mohammed is trapped in the collapse of their destroyed home. Akima and Ishaq do what they can, but cannot save Mohammed unless they can get him to a medical ship. Akima attempts to fly the ship used as the bakery, but fails. Mohammed dies. Akima dyes her bangs purple in his memory. Spurred by her failure, she joins the Fauldro Flight Academy, and Ishaq studies medicine. On Solbrecht, Akima meets Stith. The two collaborate doing cargo hauling until they are hired by Korso to help find the Titan.

Personality:
Akima is gentle but tough. Having lived through so many losses, she learns quickly how to take care of herself, as well as the meaning of hope. A determined young woman, she will do anything in her power to realize the dreams that she has grown up on.
